WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 22) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Geneva on Friday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The two teams engaged in a hotly contested match that resulted in the Golden Tornadoes leaving town with a 6-3 victory.
The Yellow Jackets (5-7, 1-5) got the match off to a solid start by winning two-of-three doubles flights. Freshman
Rory Montreuil (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica) teamed with graduate student
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) to earn an 8-6 triumph at second doubles. Sophomore
Adam Huckstein (Saxonburg, Pa. / Knoch) combined with junior
Michael Saliba (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) to defeat the opposition at number-three doubles 8-6.
Saliba improved to 2-0 on the day with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 win at fifth singles. The overall final result was ultimately decided at the number-two and number-three singles flights. Cassidy came up just short of a crucial victory at number two, which went 7-6, 7-5. Lown went to a third set in his singles contest. Unfortunately, after splitting the first two sets 6-3, 2-6, his opponent scored a 10-7 victory in the deciding set.
Waynesburg is expected to wrap up its regular season schedule by playing its third match in four days. The Jackets host Washington & Jefferson on Sunday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m.
