WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 24) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team entered Saturday's match against Washington & Jefferson with a chance to grab the sixth-and-final spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Playoffs. The Yellow Jackets extended their season by at least one more contest by rolling past the Presidents 7-2.
The victory was Waynesburg's (6-7, 2-5) first over W&J (2-10, 1-6) since 2013. It also gives head coach
Ron Headlee, who will retire at the end of the year, at least one more match with the Jackets. Headlee is also the school's head women's tennis coach and was its head wrestling coach.
The Jackets sprinted out to a fast start by sweeping all three of the day's doubles matches. Senior
Joey English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) teamed with sophomore
Ethan Lown (Lebanon, Pa. / Elizabethtown) to snag an 8-4 win at first doubles. Graduate student
Conor Cassidy (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) and freshman
Rory Montreuil (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica) had no problem in downing their opponents 8-1 at number-two doubles. Junior
Michael Saliba (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) and sophomore
Adam Huckstein (Saxonburg, Pa. / Knoch) completed the sweep with an 8-4 triumph at the third spot.
English, Cassidy, Lown and Montreuil completed 2-0 days with straight-set victories in singles competition. Saliba came up just short of joining his teammates with a solo win, but fell in a heart-breaking 6-0, 4-6, 8-10 match.
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Jackets, who will serve as the number-six seed in the PAC tournament, travels to third-seeded Saint Vincent on Tuesday, April 26. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
