WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played host to the hottest squad in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) during a special doubleheader on Saturday. After welcoming back a bevy of former players for alumni day, the Yellow Jackets squared off with Saint Vincent. Unfortunately, the Bearcats spoiled the festivities by sweeping both games of the twin bill.
Saint Vincent (20-8, 16-2) scored in the top of the first and never looked back as it took game one 10-1. The visitors tacked on a run in the second, three in the third and another in the fourth to build a 6-0 advantage. Waynesburg (9-23, 5-15) plated its only run in the bottom of the fifth when junior shortstop
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) teed off on his team-leading fifth homerun of the season.
The Bearcats responded with a score in the top of the sixth and the game's final three tallies in the top of the seventh.
Freshman catcher
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) paced the Jacket offense by going two-for-three at the dish.
Though the home offense had much more success in game two, it wasn't enough, as Saint Vincent took the late contest 19-7. The Green and Gold produced all the offense it needed in the first two innings by striking for seven runs in the top of the first and three more in the second.
After SVC went ahead 11-0 in the top of the fourth, Waynesburg got two back in the bottom of the frame. Williams and Burner both picked up RBI groundouts to make the score 11-2.
A combined three runs over the fifth and sixth innings made the score 14-2. The Jackets responded with their best offensive innings of the doubleheader in the bottom of the sixth. Burner starred in the outburst with a two-run single before coming in to score on a passed ball. First-year sophomore
Monroe Mohler (Union, W.Va. / James Monroe) picked up his first collegiate RBI to close out the inning.
The Bearcats tallied their final five runs of the game in the top of the eighth, before an error brought Waynesburg's last tally across home plate in the bottom of the frame.
Six different Jackets logged one hit each in the late contest, one of which came from graduate student
Chris Lee (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park), who also walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
The same two teams will meet up in Latrobe on Sunday, April 24, to conclude the season series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
