Volleyball scores 3-1 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny

Marsh leads Yellow Jackets to first win of 2022

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 10) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team notched its first victory of the 2022 season on Saturday by defeating Penn State Greater Allegheny 3-1 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in a non-conference tilt.
 
The Yellow Jackets (1-5) and Lions (4-2) battled back-and-forth early in the opening set. Greater Allegheny held leads of 15-10 and 19-12, but the Jackets battled back, taking advantage of several Lions errors to take a 20-19 lead following an 8-0 run. The two teams exchanged points back-and-forth, but ultimately the Jackets prevailed on a Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) ace to take the first set 28-26.
 
The Yellow Jackets took set two 25-19, dropped the third frame 25-17 and won set four 25-20 to pick up the victory.
 
Senior right-side Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) had a career day for the Yellow Jackets as she posted match- and career-highs in kills (16) and digs (28). Marsh hit a team-best .227 on the day.
 
Joining Marsh in the offensive attack were middle blockers sophomore Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) and senior Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills). Both players posted career-highs in kills as Hyatt connected on 13 successful attacks, while Stohon drilled 11 swings home.
 
Stohon had a match-high-tying three total blocks (one solo, two assisted), while Hyatt added one solo stuff.
 
Junior Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) dished out a match-high 26 assists, while freshman Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) was just behind her with 22 assists.
 
Waynesburg dominated the service line with 11 aces in the match. Ruffley led the way with a match-high-tying four aces while Stohon and Cousley chipped in three each.
 
The Yellow Jackets will be in action Tuesday when they travel to La Roche to take on the Redhawks. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
