WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted Pitt Greensburg for a Thursday night match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Bobcats by a 3-1 final score.
Waynesburg (2-6) got off on the right foot with a hard-fought 26-24 victory in set one. The Yellow Jackets followed that up with another win in a closely contested set, taking number two 25-23. The Bobcats (1-5) weren't ready to let the night end, as they pulled out 25-23 victory in set three.
The night ultimately belonged to the host team, as the Orange and Black used a 9-0 run to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 19-11 lead in set four. From there, Waynesburg settled in for a 25-16 match-deciding win. That nine-point margin of victory was the biggest advantage was the largest for either team on the night.
Senior Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) was the driving force behind Waynesburg's latest win. The veteran posted a double-double on a team-high 12 kills and 13 digs. Junior Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) had perhaps her best performance of the season as she dished out a match-high 23 assists. She also recorded a squad-high three service aces.
The victors were led defensively by sophomore Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin), who recorded a team-high 20 digs. Smith's 14 digs allowed her a double-double of her own in the win. Senior Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) was strong at the net with three solo blocks.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 17, when they compete in the Allegheny Gator Invitational. Waynesburg's first match of the event is set for 11 a.m. against the host squad in a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match.
