WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept.24) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team hosted preseason PAC favorite Bethany in a non-conference match on Saturday at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The visitors took the contest in four sets.
The Jackets (2-11) got off to a slow start early in the first set and trailed 12-7. After head coach
Emily Grossman called a timeout, the Jackets rattled off 7 of the next 8 points to go up 14-13 on the Bison (6-7). Back-to-back kills from senior
Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa / Forest Hills) gave the Yellow Jackets a 22-20 lead, and Waynesburg ultimately took the opener 25-22 on a Bethany attacking error.
Unfortunately, the Bison went on to take the next three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-17.
Stohon led Waynesburg in kills (7) and hitting percentage (.333). She also added three digs for the home squad.
Junior
Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) added five kills, freshman
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) had four and junior Brooklyn Laymon (Lynchburg, Ohio / Lynchburg-Clay) sent home three attacks in the loss.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets had four players notch double-digit digs. Baniaga had a team-high 18, while sophomore
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) added 15, junior
Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) notched 14 and sophomore
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) added 10 for Waynesburg.
Laymon had a team-high three blocks (two solo). Senior
Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) and Mortimore each added one stuff for the Yellow Jackets.
Smith posted a match-high 21 assists to go along with one kill.
The Jackets will next be in action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, for a 7 p.m. road contest at Franciscan.
