Women's soccer battles Chatham in 3-3 draw

All six goals of back-and-forth PAC contest scored in second half

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled north to Pittsburgh on Saturday for its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road game of 2022. Though the Yellow Jackets settled for a 3-3 draw, they ended a brief two-game losing streak to the Cougars, both of which were shutouts.

While the Cougars (4-2-2, 0-0-2) threw wave after wave of shots at the Jackets, 33 of them to be exact, Waynesburg (2-4-2, 0-1-1) was much more efficient, as it scored on nearly half of its seven total attempts, six of which were on goal. Saturday was also one of the truest examples of a game that was a tale of two halves.

Amazingly, the contest that ultimately saw six goals put on the board was scoreless at halftime. Chatham broke up the shutout late in the 57th minute. Roughly nine minutes later, junior Kate James (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's College H.S.) tied things up at 1-1 off an assist from junior Jacinda Devart (Grafton, W.Va. / Grafton). That goal also set the tone for how the final 45 minutes would play out.

The home team regained the lead just 1:21 later. Waynesburg counterpunched in the 72nd minute with freshman Norah Moore (Waynesboro, Va. / Waynesboro). Again, it was Devart who set up the score, giving her two assists on the night.

After Chatham regained a one-point edge at 3-2, the Jackets came up with one final answer to the challenge with 7:09 showing on the game clock. This time, it was freshman Chloe Zook (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) who did the honors. For Zook, it was her team-leading third goal of the 2022 campaign.

Waynesburg got the final chance at pulling out the win, when junior Madey Hill (Hagerstown, Md.  / North Hagerstown) put a shot on goal with 2:06 left to play. Unfortunately, Chatham's keeper came up with one last save to preserve the 3-3 draw.

Senior Kennedy Schuck (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) got the start in goal and played all 90 minutes between the pipes. She tallied seven saves as Waynesburg's goalie of record.

The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they head to Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
