LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team traveled to Saint Vincent on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the Bearcats. The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to even up the score and hold on for a 1-1 draw.
Saint Vincent (5-3-2, 1-0-2) opened the scoring in the 40
th minute to take a 1-0 edge, which it maintained until the halftime break. The Bearcats continued to lead the visiting Jackets (2-3-4, 0-0-2) into the 70
th minute, when the Orange and Black finally broke through for a score.
Freshman
Tyler Martin (Parker, Colo. / Lutheran) picked a good time to score his first collegiate goal when he headed in a deflected ball in front of the Saint Vincent net early in the 73
rd minute. Sophomore
Connor Jacobs (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) was credited with an assist.
Over the final 16:43 following the Waynesburg goal, the two teams traded shots in a back-and-forth sprint to the finish line. The Jackets attempted the final shot of the game with 4:38 remaining in the contest, but the attempt was blocked and neither team was able to muster much offensive pressure over the remainder of the game.
Not surprisingly, the two teams posted similar numbers in several statistical categories. Waynesburg held a slim 18-14 advantage in total shots, but the two squads matched each other with five shots on goal each.
The visitors boasted a solid advantage in corner kicks (9-3).
Sophomore
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) put together another solid effort in goal to help preserve the draw. Francus tallied four saves and kept Saint Vincent off the board, while the Jacket offense found its rhythm.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
