ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. (Sept. 6) – The Waynesburg University men's golf team opened the 2022 season with a dual match against Geneva on Tuesday at the Par 71 Connoquenessing Country Club. The contest went right down to the wire, with the Golden Tornadoes pulling out a 331-332 win.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1) were led by a pair of freshmen, who impressed in their first collegiate competition.
Matthew Karpeal (Smithfield, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) earned medalist honors after carding a four-over score of 75 to pace all 17 golfers who hit the course. He finished three strokes ahead of the second-place performer.
Fellow rookie
Hudson Pincavitch (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) tallied a nine-over 80 to take third in the individual scoring.
Two Yellow Jacket veterans, senior
Carter Newcome (Punxsutawney, Pa. / Punxsutawney) and junior
Briston Bennett (Mt. Morris, Pa. / Trinity Christian), carded scores of 87 and 90, respectively on the day. The Jackets' scoring five was completed by freshman
Alex Solomon (Morgantown, W.Va. / University), who tallied a 111 in his first collegiate match.
Waynesburg is scheduled to return to the course on Thursday, Sept. 15, when it competes in the Grove City Invitational. Tee time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Grove City Country Club.
