OBERLIN, Ohio (Sept. 7) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to Oberlin in a road non-conference tilt at Philips Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Owls (2-1) controlled the tempo early in the first set and jumped out to a 15-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (0-5) fought back in the set and used an 8-4 run to cut the Oberlin lead to one at 19-18. The Owls regained their footing, going on a 4-1 surge to grow their advantage to 23-19.
The Yellow Jackets continued to fight and scored four-straight points to knot the opening set at 23-23. Unfortunately, Oberlin halted the Waynesburg rally and posted the final two points of the opening game to move ahead 1-0 in the match.
The home team took sets two and three by scores of 25-12 and 25-8, respectively, to close out the night.
Senior
Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) posted a team-high five kills with no errors on 14 swings. Marsh also tied for the match lead with two blocks.
Freshman
Emily Stutzman (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) contributed four kills while hitting .250.
Junior
Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) paced the Jackets with a team-high seven assists.
Defensively, the road team was paced by junior
Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) and sophomore
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin), who tied for the squad lead with nine digs each.
The Yellow Jackets will be in action again on Saturday with a pair of home matches at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. They take on Pitt Greensburg at 11 a.m. and Penn State Greater Allegheny at 3p.m.
