Volleyball sweeps home tri-match

Yellow Jackets down Penn State Shenango and Hilbert

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted Penn State Shenango and Hilbert for a tri-match on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets swept their two matches by defeating Shenango 3-1 and Hilbert 3-0.
 
Waynesburg (7-8) took the opener by the set scores of 25-5, 5-21, 25-14 and 25-9. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian), who tied for the match lead with nine kills. Classmate Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) also logged nine successful attacks, and tallied a contest-best four blocks.
 
Freshman Ryanna Baniaga (Honolulu, Hawaii / Sacred Hearts) helped out the offense with 11 assists, while sophomore Macee Cree (Garards Fort, Pa. / Mapletown) paced Waynesburg's defensive efforts against the Lions (1-10) with a team-best 15 digs.
 
In the Jackets' late contest, they rolled to a sweep of the Hawks (7-7) by the set scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-10.
 
Sophomore Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) led the way with a match-high 12 kills, while Dayton chipped in nine of her own.
 
Hyatt led Waynesburg in both aces (3) and blocks (3), while her former high school teammate – freshman Kendall Ellsworth (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) – tallied a team-high 17 assists. Sophomore Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) chipped in 16 helpers to the victorious effort.
 
The Jacket defense was led by junior Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin), who tallied a contest-high 21 digs. Mortimore just missed out on a double-double after recording nine digs.
 
Waynesburg opens its 2023 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 4, with a road trip to Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
