WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 11) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team locked horns with Bethany in an intense Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Wednesday night at John F. Wiley Stadium. After a scoreless first half, both offenses cranked up the intensity in a back-and-forth second period that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net until Bethany (2-8-2, 1-3-2) opened the scoring in the 57
th minute. Waynesburg (7-4-1, 4-2-1) tied the score at 1-1 three minutes later when senior
Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) buried a penalty kick.
The home team took its first and only lead of the night when junior
Connor Jacobs (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) took a feed from classmate
Seth Massotti (Douglass, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) and buried it past the Bethany keeper. With 11 minutes showing on the game clock, the Jackets held a 2-1 lead and were looking to go to 7-0 at home.
Waynesburg killed 9:15 of the remaining game time, before Bethany managed to slip in the equalizer with just 1:45 showing on the clock. Neither team was able to get off a potential game-winning kick, and the two conference rivals settled for the 2-2 draw.
Though the overall shots were almost even at 17-16 in favor of Waynesburg, the Yellow Jackets were more efficient than the opposition, as they put eight of those attempts on goal, as opposed to four by the visitors.
The most lopsided figures on the night came in the game's foul totals, which saw Bethany whistled for 13 violations, to Waynesburg's five. The contest saw five total yellow cards handed out, including three going against the host squad.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, with a road trip to Westminster. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
