NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 14) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Westminster on Saturday to face the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), Westminster. The Yellow Jackets scored first and were thinking upset, before four-straight Titan goals gave the home team a 4-1 victory.
Freshman
Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, Va. / Hanover) picked a great time for her first collegiate goal, which came in the 40
th minute.
However, the tally seemed to wake up Westminster (12-2, 6-1), which tied the game up just 33 seconds later. Just over three minutes later, the Titans logged the eventual game winner with 1:18 showing on the first half clock.
The home team added insurance goals in the 49
th and 56
th minutes to secure the victory.
The overall numbers on the game were relatively close, as the Titans only outshot the Jacket 23-20 and outdid the Orange and Black by just one (13-12) in shots on goal.
Sophomore
Mya Riggle (Ford City, Pa. / Armstrong) got the start in goal and stopped eight-of-12 shots on goal over 58:54 of play. Freshman
Emily Beck (Pittsburgh, Pa. / West Mifflin) played the final 31:06 and stopped the Titans' only shot on goal she faced.
The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when they welcome Grove City to John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
