WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 18) – A quick goal had the Waynesburg University women's soccer team thinking upset when it hosted a red-hot Grove City team on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, the Wolverines got itself out of the early deficit and added the game winner in the second half to pick up a 2-1 victory.
Just 56 seconds into the contest, senior
Madey Hill (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) put Waynesburg (6-6-2, 4-3-2) in the lead with her third of the season. Senior
Kate James (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's College H.S.) logged her Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)-leading ninth assist to set up the tally. That number has her tied for sixth in all of NCAA Division III in terms of helpers.
The Jackets maintained their lead throughout the first half. Waynesburg kept its edge until 52
nd minute, when Grove City (10-4-1, 7-0-1) got the equalizer on a penalty kick. The Wolverines proceeded to connect on the game winner in the 68
th minute.
After outshooting the Wolverines 11-10 in the first half, the visitors rebounded to double up their hosts in total attempts 8-4.
Freshman
Emily Beck (Pittsburgh, Pa. / West Mifflin) faced a tall test in her first collegiate start in goal and performed well enough to give her team a chance at victory against the top team in the conference. Beck tallied six saves over 90 minutes between the pipes.
Waynesburg will squeeze in one final non-conference matchup on Saturday, when Lancaster Bible College comes to John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
