WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 25) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team hosted Geneva on Wednesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. The two squads battled over five sets, before the Golden Tornadoes used a late 4-1 run to pull out the 3-2 victory.
Geneva (10-10, 3-4) opened the night with a 25-18 win in set one, before the Yellow Jackets (8-14, 1-6) bounced back by taking set two 25-20 and set three 25-23. The visitors roared back in a big way by downing the Jackets 25-12 in set four to force a match-deciding fifth game.
After the two teams split the first eight points, Geneva grabbed a 6-4 edge. Waynesburg bounced back by taking five of the next six points and building a 9-7 advantage. A 4-0 GT surge was followed by three-straight for the Orange and Black.
Two points later, Waynesburg was clinging to a 13-12 edge, but the visitors rebounded to go up 14-13. Facing match point, the Jackets tied the score back up on a Geneva service error. Unfortunately, back-to-back kills for the Gold and Black ultimately decided the set 16-14 and gave the GT's the win.
Though it didn't lead to victory, Waynesburg got a solid 17-kill performance from sophomore
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood). Junior
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. Calvary Christian) chipped in 13 kills on the evening.
Freshman
Kendall Ellsworth (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) and sophomore
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) helped out the offense with 19 and 14 assists, respectively. Ellsworth finished off a double-double with 14 digs.
Speaking of digs, junior
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) piled up a match-high 33 of them. Her 5.85 digs per set currently leads the PAC. Staying on the defensive side of things, freshman
Carissa Krall (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) tallied a contest-best five blocks.
Waynesburg is back in action at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday morning when it hosts Thiel for another PAC contest. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
