BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Nov. 1) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team traveled to Geneva on Wednesday night for the program's first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) semifinal match since 2001. The Yellow Jackets were thinking upset after opening the scoring, but the top-seeded Golden Tornadoes rebounded with three-straight tallies to pick up a 3-1 victory and advance to the title match.
Waynesburg (10-7-2) got the opening score from senior
Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom), who cashed in a penalty kick in the eighth minute. Unfortunately, Geneva (11-4-4) tied things up just 1:26 later.
The GT's posted the eventual game winner in the 23
rd minute and took their 2-1 advantage into the halftime break. The home team added an insurance goal late in the 58
th minute to secure the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) played all 90 minutes in net and logged six saves on the evening.
Though the season ended on a sour note, 2023 will be one to remember for the Jackets, who improved their overall record from 3-9-5 to 10-7-2and saw their PAC record improve from 1-6-3 to 5-3-2. Waynesburg is also expected to return seven of tonight's starting 11, all of its keepers and four of its top five point producers.
Speaking of scoring, the Jackets jumped from 10
th in the conference in scoring (.944) to second (2.316).
