Jacket women open PAC play with shootout in Bethany

Bison outduel Waynesburg 98-79

BETHANY, W.Va. (Nov. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team continued to showcase a much-improved offense from a year ago when it traveled to Bethany to tip off Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday. Unfortunately, the host Bison showed they know how to score the basketball as well during a 98-79 victory for the host squad.

Bethany (3-1, 2-0) used its accuracy from long distance to build a 61-38 halftime lead. Waynesburg (0-4, 0-1) was able to close the gap in the third quarter by outscoring the opposition 24-19 in the period. The Yellow Jackets shot nine-of-18 from the floor and an impressive six-of-eight from three-point range in the period.

Waynesburg whittled its deficit down to 11 points (86-75) in the fourth quarter, but the Bison outscored the visitors 12-4 over the final 5:26 to seal the victory.

The Jackets were led by the freshman guard trio of Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown), Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) and Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central).

Henkins poured in 18 points, all of which came from a six-for-12 effort from three-point range. McFadden connected on four treys for that made up most of her 14 points. Friday made a massive impact off the bench by going seven-of-12 from the floor and four-of-five from three-point range on her way to a team-high 19 points over 22 minutes played. She also paced her team with five assists.

Waynesburg outrebounded Bethany 42-32, thanks in large part to massive efforts on the glass from junior Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) and freshman Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom), both of whom were making their first starts of the season. Dayton yanked down a game-high 15 boards, while Mohrbacher added 10. Both post players tallied nine points each in the contest.

The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21, when they travel to Westminster. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
