LAMONT FURNACE, Pa. (Dec. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team went outside the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Monday when it traveled to Penn State Fayette. The Yellow Jackets scored the game's first 14 points and never trailed on the evening, as they picked up their first win of the season by a 78-52 final score.
Waynesburg (1-9) opened up a 20-8 lead after 10 minutes of play and grew its advantage to 37-16 by halftime. The break didn't seem to slow down the Yellow Jacket offensive rhythm, as the visitors put up 25 points in the third quarter. By the time the final 10 minutes of action go underway, the Jackets led 62-34.
The Orange and Black used the sizeable advantage to go deep into the bench, which led to 15 different Waynesburg players scoring at least one point each. Freshman
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) and sophomore
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) paced the Jackets with 10 points each. Senior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) chipped in nine to the winning effort, while freshman
Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) contributed eight to the victory.
When it comes to rebounding, freshmen
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) finished one-two on the team with 10 and eight boards, respectively. Defensively, Henkins tallied a contest-best five steals.
Not only did Monday's victory get Waynesburg off the skid for 2023-24, but it also snapped a 21-game losing streak that stretched back to last season.
The Yellow Jackets will head their separate ways to celebrate Christmas, before reuniting on Saturday, Dec. 30, for a return to PAC play. Waynesburg travels to Grove City to face the Wolverines for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
