WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a 74-50 contest to Interstate-79 rival Washington and Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup.
Before the contest, the Yellow Jackets honored senior
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) for her contributions to the Jackets program over the last four seasons. Dansby, a four-year starter, has been the on-court leader for Waynesburg this season through her grit, tenacity and team-first mentality.
The Yellow Jackets (2-21, 2-16 PAC) held an early 12-6 lead with 4:53 left in the opening period thanks to 5 points each from Dansby and junior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside), and a layup from freshman
Emma Seto (Allison, Pa. / Brownsville). The Presidents (21-2, 17-1 PAC) closed the opening period on a 12-4 run to hold an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
W&J scored the first 8 points of the second quarter to extend its lead to 26-16. The Presidents grew their advantage to as many as 12 points over the remainder of the period and took a 35-23 lead into the break.
The Jackets were outscored 39-11 over the second and third quarter and were unable to claw into the deficit as the PAC-best Presidents walked away with the win.
Dansby posted a game-high 19 points in her final home contest for the Yellow Jackets on 7-of-17 shooting. She also logged team bests in rebounds (eight), assists (four) and steals (two).
The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Wednesday when they travel to Steubenville to take on Franciscan. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
