STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Franciscan on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. Some cold shooting issues put the Yellow Jackets in a deficit they couldn't climb out of, as Franciscan picked up a 64-52 win.
The Jackets (2-22, 2-17) picked up their first lead of the night when junior
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) knocked down a three pointer that put them ahead 7-6 after 3:54 of play. Franciscan (4-19, 3-16) responded by scoring six of the final eight points of the quarter to take a 12-9 lead into the second period.
The Barons scored the first 11 points of the second period to expand their advantage to 23-9 after 13:30 of play. The home team grew its lead to as many as 16 in the quarter, before heading to the locker room up 31-19.
Franciscan put the game away by outscoring Waynesburg 20-16 in the third quarter. The Jackets were able to pull to within eight points (59-51) with 1:50 remaining in the contest. However, the Barons scored five of the evening's final six points to close out the victory.
Wolf led the charge for the Jackets with a game-high 17 points. She just missed out on a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds. Her defensive efforts were highlighted by three steals.
Freshmen
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) and
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) added eight points each to Waynesburg's penultimate game of the season.
The Yellow Jackets wrap up the 2022-23 schedule on Saturday when they head to Allegheny to face the Gators. Tipoff for the PAC contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
