WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 25) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team made more program history during a home non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match against Spalding on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets rolled to a 19-2 victory over the Golden Eagles.
Saturday's win accomplished the following:
- Widest margin of victory ever (17 points)
- First multi-win season since 2016
- Best five-game start since 2015
- First season with multiple home wins since 2015
- Most goals in a game since scoring 23 in 2015
Waynesburg (2-3) shut out Spalding (0-7) over the first half of play and led 11-0 at the break. Senior
Tori Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md. / Boonsboro) led the charge with four of her game-high seven goals over the first 30 minutes of play. Senior
Eve O'Sullivan (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) also found the back of the net four times over the first two quarters.
Fellow seniors
Alexis Shandor (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin),
Madi Zajdel (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and
Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) also scored before the halftime break.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Anna Bradley (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) started and played the first 30 minutes in goal. She stopped Spalding's only shot on goal over that time frame. Freshman
Diana Gurecka (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) played the final 30 minutes and tallied a save of her own.
Meiklejohn scored two more times in the third, while sophomore
Sam Earnest (Honey Brook, Pa. / Conestoga Christian) split the pipes for the first of two goals on the afternoon. Spalding tallied both of its goals on free position shots in period number three.
The Jackets closed out the victory with a 5-0 fourth quarter that included scores from Earnest, Caldwell, Meiklejohn, Bradley and junior
Madey Hill (Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown).
Waynesburg also set a major team record with its passing. The Jackets' 14 assists as a team blew past the previous mark. Shandor led the way with a game-high four helpers. Caldwell chipped in three and Hill had two. Five other Jackets tallied one assist each.
Waynesburg outshot Spalding 39-9 and bested the Golden Eagles 35-4 in shots on goal.
The Jackets outdid Spalding 39-12 in ground balls. Caldwell scooped up six, while Bradley racked up five.
Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, March 28, when it travels to Chatham for the first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game of the year. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
