PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 28) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team traveled to Pittsburgh Tuesday night to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play against league-leading Chatham University. Unfortunately, the Jackets were unable to slow the Cougars offense and fell 23-3.
The Cougars (5-1, 1-0 PAC) got off to a quick start with a pair of goals 37 seconds into the contest to go up 2-0. The Yellow Jackets (2-4, 0-1 PAC) responded 1:10 later as senior Tori Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md. / Boonsboro) netted her 19th goal of the season off a Tara Wildner (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) pass to cut the deficit in half.
Meiklejohn's 19 goals are tied for seventh in the PAC and her 3.8 goals per game are good for fifth in the conference. The senior standout also posted a team-best six ground balls in the loss.
The Cougars answered with seven-straight tallies to build a 9-1 lead with 5:57 left in the opening quarter.
Senior Eve O'Sullivan's (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) 14th goal of the season at the 3:24 mark of the first period cut the deficit to 9-2, but Chatham again responded with eight unanswered goals to take a 17-2 lead into the intermission.
Senior Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valey) added her seventh goal of the season with 6:50 left in the third quarter. Chatham fired back with the night's final six tallies to bring about the 23-3 final.
Sophomore Anna Bradley (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) got the start in goal and made five saves over 40:35 of play. Freshman Diana Gurecka (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) closed out the game and tallied a pair of stops between the pipes.
The Yellow Jackets return to the field tomorrow night for a road PAC-matchup at Allegheny. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
