WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 27) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted Saint Vincent on Wednesday night for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets had the contest tied at one set apiece, before the Bearcats took sets three and four for a 3-1 win.
The Bearcats (6-6) opened the night with a 25-22 triumph in set one. Waynesburg (5-8) rebounded with a 25-23 win in set two. Unfortunately, the visitors fired back by posting victories of 25-14 and 25-17.
The Yellow Jackets were led offensively by junior
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian), who recorded a team-high 11 kills. Junior
Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) and sophomore
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) tallied nine kills each.
Freshman
Kendall Ellsworth (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) and senior
Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) tallied 14 and 13 assists, respectively, to help out the offense.
The Waynesburg defense was impressive at the net, as the Yellow Jackets outdid the Bearcats in blocks to the tune of an 8-2 differential. Freshman
Carissa Krall (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) led the charge with six stuffs, two of which were of the solo variety. Speaking of defense, junior
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) racked up a match-best 31 digs.
Waynesburg wraps up non-conference action on Saturday by hosting Penn State Shenango and Hilbert for a tri-match. The first contest of the day is scheduled for 11 a.m.
