WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 1) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team kicked off the 2023 season at John F. Wiley Stadium with a home game against the University of Mount Union. After playing to a tie at halftime, the visiting Purple Raiders tallied a pair of second-half goals that were the difference in a 3-1 final score.
Mount Union (1-0) opened the scoring in the eighth minute to grab a 1-0 lead. Waynesburg (0-1) got an equalizer roughly two minutes later when junior
Haley Johnson (Somerset, Pa. / Rockwood) floated a pass to freshman
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. The score remained tied as the two teams broke for halftime.
The contest remained deadlocked for 22:23 in the second half, before the Raiders logged the eventual game winner. The visitors added an insurance goal late in the 76
th minute to bring about the final score.
Mohrbacher led all participants with four total shots, two of which were on goal.
Sophomore
Mya Riggle (Ford City, Pa. / Armstrong) got the start in goal for the Jackets and made six saves over 90 minutes.
Waynesburg is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 3, when it travels to Mount Aloysius for another non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
