CRESSON, Pa. (Sept. 3) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Mount Aloysius on Sunday for its second game in three days. The Yellow Jackets' constant pressure on the Mounties finally broke through in the second half for three goals that were the difference in a 4-1 victory.
Waynesburg (1-1) peppered Mount Aloysius with 26 total shots, 15 of which were on goal over 90 minutes of play, while holding the Mounties (0-1-1) to two total attempts. The Jackets also attempted 14 corner kicks, while Mount Aloysius got just one attempt from the flags.
Despite the lopsided numbers, Waynesburg didn't get its first goal until the 25
th minute when freshman
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) scored her second goal in as many games to give her team a 1-0 edge. The host squad got its only goal of the day midway through the 40
th minute to even things up. When the two opponents broke for halftime, the score was still knotted at 1-1.
The game remained tired for 12:33 of period number two. However, from the 57
th minute on, the Orange and Black was able to control the contest and it was Mohrbacher who led her team to victory.
The first-year standout secured her first collegiate multi-goal game after taking a feed from senior
Kate James (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's College H.S.) and splitting the pipes in the 57
th minute. Mohrbacher added her first assist as a Jacket during the 77
th minutes by setting up junior
Haley Johnson (Somerset, Pa. / Rockwood) for her first of 2023.
With her team already up 3-1, sophomore
Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) put the finishing touches on win number one of the fall with an unassisted score late in the 85
th minute.
Waynesburg will play its third game in six days on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when La Roche travels to John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
