WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan.17) – The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets posted a come-from-behind 74-71 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Westminster College on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
Trailing 69-66 with 2:04 left in the game, junior
Jordan McLoyd (Johnson City, Tenn. / Science Hill) nailed a pull-up jumper just beyond the free-throw line to pull the Jackets (8-8, 5-6) within 1 and force a Titans (7-9, 5-7) timeout.
After a pair of empty possessions for each side, senior
Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) came up with a big steal just beyond the 3-point arc and was fouled on his fast-break layup attempt. Baker canned both free throws to put the Jackets up 70-69 with 42 seconds left to play.
A Westminster dunk on the following possession gave the visitors a 71-70 lead with 30 seconds remaining, but it was Baker again who put the Jackets back on top with a pull-up, straight-away jay just inside the arc to give the Orange and Black a 72-71 lead with 14 seconds left.
The Titans, looking to steal a road victory, raced down the court and put up a right-side corner 3-pointer that Baker blocked. Just as the ball was about to go out of bounds, Baker made a leaping save, keeping the ball in play and giving possession to the Yellow Jackets. A pair of McLoyd free throws with 3 seconds left spelled the 74-71 final score.
Baker finished with 20 points on 9-of-14 from the field to go with a game-best three blocks and six rebounds in the victory.
While it was Baker's heroics that saved the day for the home team, it was fellow big junior
Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) who posted his best performance to date as a Jacket. Davis racked up a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double night. His marks in points, rebounds and steals (four) were all game bests. The junior standout went 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 at the line with 17 of his 21 points coming in the first half.
McLoyd added 15 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe in the win.
Senior
Jansen Knotts (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Frankfort) provided another solid all-around performance with 7 points, three rebounds and a team-best three assists.
The Yellow Jackets return to action this Saturday, Jan. 20, for a 3 p.m. PAC matchup with Bethany. Saturday's contest is sure to be a memorable day as the first 200 fans in attendance will receive commemorative clappers in honor of Waynesburg University's 175th anniversary year. Saturday is also Alumni Day as well as the reunion for the Yellow Jackets' 1988 NAIA Final Four team.
