LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 27) -- The Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a 70-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Saint Vincent College Saturday night at the Robert S. Carry Center.
The Yellow Jackets (4-15, 3-11) and Bearcats (10-9, 8-6) went back and forth in the games opening quarter as there were three ties and six lead changes in the first 10 minutes. The Jackets capped a 12-3 run on an
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) 3-pointer to turn a 7-3 deficit at the 6:08 mark into a 15-13 lead with 2:15 left in the quarter. The Jackets ultimately held a 19-17 lead after the opening frame.
After a slow start to the second quarter for both sides, the Jackets led 24-21 after a pair of
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) free throws with 5:35 left until the break. The Bearcats closed the quarter on a 13-1 run to take a 34-25 lead into halftime.
Mohrbacher added her 10th double-digit rebound performance in 18 appearances with her team-best 12 boards. She also had a team-high-tying two steals and a pair of assists.
The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 5 (46-41) in the third quarter as
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) drained a 3-ball with 54 seconds left in the quarter. This was as close as the Jackets got the rest of the game as the Bearcats grew their lead to as many as 14 in the final quarter.
Friday notched a game-high-tying 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. She added four rebounds and two assists in the defeat.
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) added 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field.
While the Jackets were outscored 17-6 in the second quarter, they played the remaining three quarters nearly even with the Bearcats (53-52).
The Yellow Jackets return to action next Wednesday, Jan. 31, for a 5:30 p.m. PAC meeting with Geneva College.
