BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 31) -- The Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Geneva College on Wednesday night at the Metheny Fieldhouse 77-52.
The Yellow Jackets (4-16, 3-12) trailed 12-11 with 31 seconds left in the quarter following a
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) layup. The Golden Tornadoes (10-11, 9-7) hit a pair of free throws with 8 seconds left in the quarter and ultimately led 14-11 after 10 minutes.
The Jackets started the second quarter strong with a 7-2 run capped off by a
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) layup to give the visitors an 18-16 lead with 8:06 left until the break. Both sides went back and forth and the Golden Tornadoes clinged to a slim 22-20 lead at the 4:26 mark of the quarter. Geneva closed the half on a 16-3 run to lead 38-23 at the intermission.
The home side outscored the Orange and Black 39-29 in the second half in route to the 77-52 win.
Howard and
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) led the Jackets with 9 points each. Howard added three rebounds and an assist while Friday pitched in four rebounds and a team-best two assists. Mohrbacher had a team-leading six rebounds and 4 points.
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) and
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) posted 7 points each. All 7 of Dansby's points came at the free-throw line (7-of-8).Â
As a team, the Yellow Jackets were 25-of-38 from the charity stripe. Waynesburg's 38 free-throw attempts and 25 makes at the line were both season-highs for the team.
The Jackets return home Saturday when they face off with Allegheny College in a 1 p.m. PAC clash.
