Men’s Soccer defeated at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (October 11) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg falls to 7-4-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. The Bearcats rise to 2-6-6, 1-3-1 PAC.

The Jackets trailed 2-0 at the half with Saint Vincent's Mattia Speretta tallying goals in the 26th and 40th minutes of the contest.

Saint Vincent scored the opening goal after a long pass from the defensive midfield found Speretta behind the Waynesburg back line and he converted the breakaway opportunity into the lower left corner.

The Bearcats' second goal came after possession changed back-and-forth outside Waynesburg's 18-yard box. The Jackets took the ball but Saint Vincent quickly won it back and Speretta knocked a shot off the crossbar, directly down and bounced into the goal.

The Bearcats outshot Waynesburg 11-6 in the first half. Both of the Jackets' shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes came from Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade), one on a free kick and another following a Waynesburg free kick in Saint Vincent territory. Liam Mowbray (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany) had a shot miss wide right after another Jacket set piece in the first half.

Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) nearly put the Jackets on the scoreboard in the first minute of the second half as he beat two defenders inside the 18-yard box and ripped a shot past the charging Saint Vincent goalie but just wide of the left post. Johnson had another close-range attempt in the 48th minute as Kwabiah served a free kick to the six-yard box and Johnson's header was snared by the Bearcats' keeper.

Saint Vincent added a third goal in the 55th minute as a smart through ball created a breakaway opportunity that Bearcats converted to lead 3-0.

Johnson maneuvered around a defender and was taken down in the penalty area while attempting a shot in the 63rd minute but was not awarded a penalty kick. Less than a minute later, Saint Vincent found its fourth goal on a looping close-range shot off a pass from the right end line.

Kwabiah, Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) and Henry Hawkins (Great Mills, Md. / Great Mills) stepped into long-range attempts that missed high and wide in the second half.

The Bearcats finished with a 21-15 edge in shots (11-6 SOG) while Waynesburg had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) finished with seven saves in the game.

Waynesburg heads to Chatham on Wednesday.
