Women’s Soccer edged at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (October 11) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped at Saint Vincent as the Jackets fell 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg falls to 6-4-2 on the season and 2-3-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Saint Vincent rises to 11-1-1 and remains unbeaten in league play at 5-0.

All five goals were scored in the second half with the two teams exchanging goals in close succession until the Bearcats netted the game winner in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

After a scoreless first half Saint Vincent took a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal after a successful save by Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) in the 57th minute.

The Jackets answered just over a minute later via a penalty kick tally. Demaree Livingston was taken out while inside the 18-yard box to draw the PK. Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) calmly buried the attempt into the upper right corner of the goal from the penalty spot to knot the game at one.

Greenlief made a diving stop on a well-struck shot from outside the right post to keep the scored tie at one.

The Bearcats struck again the 76th minute with a free kick into the 18-yard box. Rather than being redirected by another offensive player, it bounced through traffic and went in to give the hosts a 2-1 edge.

Again, Waynesburg responded in the next minute of play with an equalizer. Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) made a looping pass to Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) beyond the Saint Vincent back line and Pepe fired a left-footed shot off a charging defender and past the Bearcat goalie to tie the game at two in the 76th minute.

The Bearcats took the lead for the third and final time with a wide-angled shot from beyond the right edge of the penalty area. Saint Vincent's Jordan Kirkwood looped what may have started as a cross just inside the opposite post for a goal. The Bearcats went ahead 3-2 in the 81st minute.

Mohrbacher had an attempt on target plucked out of the air in the 84th and Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, Va. / Hanover) had a grounded shot miss wide in the 85th. Waynesburg was held without an attempt on goal for the final five minutes of regulation as the Bearcats held on for the 3-2 victory.

The first half saw a total of seven shots with Waynesburg attempting two of the three shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Mittendorf had a clean look from 25 yards out but her attempt was stopped in the middle of the net by the Bearcat goalie.

Saint Vincent had a header on target after a free kick in the 13th minute that Greenlief out of the air.

Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) stepped into a long-distance shot that was snatched by the Saint Vincent keeper just below the crossbar in the 23rd minute.

Saint Vincent had a 13-8 edge in shots but both teams had five shots on goal. Each team recorded two corner kicks in the game.

Mittendorf and Mohrbacher led the Jackets with two shots each. Greenlief finished with two saves.

The Jackets conclude their three-game road swing at Chatham on Wednesday evening.
