WAYNESBURG, Pa. (October 15) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team was defeated in three sets by non conference opponent Hiram on Tuesday night. The Terriers won the game with scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 26-24.
Hiram moves up to 7-11 overall while the Jackets fall to 4-13 overall.
After an early 4-0 Hiram run Waynesburg battled to keep the first set close as the score was tied at nine. The Terriers pulled away with scoring runs of 6-0, 5-3 and 5-2 to ultimately take the first set with a score of 25-15.
The Jackets battled in the second set and took a two-point lead against Hiram within the first 20 points. (11-9) Then the Terriers answered with a 7-1 run to gain the lead and despite a Waynesburg comeback effort that knotted the frame at 19, a 6-1 run by Hiram closed out the set at 25-20.
Waynesburg opened the third set with 7-2 and kept through the first 15 points (8-7). Hiram answered big as the Terriers went on a 10-1 run to grab a sizeable lead at 17-9 and continued their efforts until Waynesburg was down by 10 at 23-13. The Jackets never gave up on the set as they responded with an electric 11-0 run to take the lead and hold set point at 24-23. The Terriers survived the Waynesburg attack and won the set and the game off of three straight kills (26-24).
Offensively the Jackets were led by sophomore
Krista Wilson (Greensboro, Pa. / Mapletown) who totaled nine kills on the day while
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) had seven. Seniors
Madi Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian) and
Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) had five on the night. Junior
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) led Waynesburg in assists with 14 while senior
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) assisted with eight.
The Jacket defense was led by senior
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) who totaled 18 digs while Ruffley posted a season best with 13 to set her second straight double-double performance. Hyatt and Ruffley each had a block respectively.
Waynesburg returns to PAC play on Saturday in a home contest against Chatham.
