Women’s Soccer ties Franciscan on Homecoming

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (October 19) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Franciscan on Homecoming at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday evening.

Waynesburg moves to 7-4-3 on the season and 3-3-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Waynesburg sits in fifth in the league standings with 11 points, a point ahead of Bethany and Franciscan, however Bethany has three PAC games remaining whereas the Jackets have two conference matchups left.

After a scoreless first half, Franciscan notched the game's opening goal six minutes into the second half with a long-range strike that hit the upper-left corner of the woodwork and bounced down, just inside the goal line.

The Jackets generated three corner kicks in the next 15 minutes of play and generated two shots off the corner kicks but were unable to find an equalizer.

With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) had a shot stopped by Franciscan's charging goalkeeper and the rebound settled at the left foot of Amanda Pepe. Pepe's (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) shot trickled wide right of the open net.

Waynesburg struck in 81st minute as Brooklyn Loveland (New Cumberland, W. Va. / Oak Glen) looped a high arcing pass into the penalty area towards Mohrbacher. A Baron poked the ball away from Mohrbacher to the top of the box and directly to a charging Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton), who blasted a shot into the upper 90 to knot the game at one.

Following Waynesburg's game-tying goal, the Jackets recorded a corner kick in the 85th and Franciscan had a shot miss wide in the 87th as the game ended in a draw.

In the first half, Waynesburg had shots on goal in the 10th, 11th and 12th minutes that were all turned away. Following a corner kick in the 21st, Pepe had a volley cleared off the goal line by a Franciscan defender.

The Jackets outshot Franciscan 20-8 in the game and 14-4 on target. Waynesburg had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Mittendorf has scored in three of Waynesburg's last four games. Mittendorf and Mohrbacher combined for 10 shots, nine of which were on goal.

Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) had three saves on the day.

The Jackets host Geneva next Saturday for senior day and a Waynesburg University 175th Anniversary Celebration game.
