Men’s Soccer plays Allegheny to 1-1 draw

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (October 2) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team worked a 1-1 draw against Allegheny at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Jackets remain unbeaten in their last five games and move to 6-2-1 on the year and 2-0-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Allegheny now stands at 1-8-3, 0-1-2 PAC.

The two teams managed one shot on target and two corner kicks each in the opening 20 minutes of scoreless action. The Jackets earned a pair of corners in the 21st minute but the only shot of the sequence sailed high.

The Gators seemed to score the opening goal of the half in the 25th minute but the tally was waved off due to the scoring player being offside. Less than two minutes later, Sam Norris (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) disrupted a what would have been a tap-in goal by deflecting the final pass of the Allegheny sequence out of play.

Allegheny struck in the 35th minute with a bicycle kick goal from 13 yards out into the upper left corner of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton La Salle) cut off a potential goal-scoring transition opportunity for Allegheny in the 42nd minute with a slide tackle just outside the penalty area and followed it up with a save less than 30 seconds later.

Allegheny carried its 1-0 lead into the half.

Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / Saint Joseph Central Catholic) ripped a shot off the left post in the 59th minute. The Jackets broke through in the 71st as Michael Kanu (Columbus, Ohio / Tree of Life Christian) snuck a shot beneath the Allegheny keeper to tie the game at one. Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) found Kanu with a through ball approaching the left corner of the six-yard box and Kanu stepped into a close-range attempt from the left post that trickled in after contacting the goalie.

The Jacket defense blocked a pair of close-range shots in quick succession and a third attempt sailed wide in the 76th minute. Reed snatched a well-struck shot in the 86th minute to maintain the score line.

Allegheny held a 17-8 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Waynesburg had five corner kicks, compared to three for the Gators.

Reed finished with nine saves in his first start of the season.

The Jackets host Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.
