GROVE CITY, Pa. (October 30) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team closed its regular season with a 1-1 tie at Grove City defeat at Grove City on Wednesday evening.
The Jackets, who clinched a spot in the PAC Tournament on Saturday, finish the regular season with an 8-4-4 overall record and a 4-3-3 mark in PAC play. Waynesburg finished the season with 15 points in the league standings and will be the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
Grove City, who had the opportunity to secure the top overall seed in PAC Tournament with win, settled for a second-place finish in the conference standings with a record of 11-3-3, 8-0-2 PAC. Waynesburg was the only team besides regular season champion Westminster to work a draw with the Wolverines.
Grove City scored in the game's ninth minute as the Wolverines scored on a redirect into the opposite corner off an end-line cross to the left post.
The Wolverines continued to pepper the net as Grove City outshot Waynesburg 23-1 in the first half.
Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) made six stops and kept the margin at 1-0 at halftime.
The Jackets found an equalizer in the 59th minute on a nearly identical goal as Grove City's.
Sutton Clark (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) made a cross from the outer right edge of the 18-yard box, near the end line, and found
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) at the right post. Mohrbacher volleyed the cross past the Wolverine keeper to tie the game on Waynesburg's third shot of the night.
The Wolverines had a tally waved off in the 81st minute as a Grove City player was offside on a corner kick. With three minutes left in regulation, Greenlief made a one-on-stop reaction save at the left post.
After Waynesburg's equalizer, the Wolverines attempted 20 shots and Greenlief made eight saves. Greenlief's final save came in the 90th minute with
Abby Ngugi (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) clearing the rebounding away.
Natasha Ward (New Cumberland, W.Va. / Oak Glen) blocked a shot in the waning seconds as the Jackets escaped with a 1-1 draw.
The Wolverines held a 52-3 edge in shots and had an 18-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Wolverines had all 10 corner kicks in the contest.
Mohrbacher had two of Waynesburg's three shots and the Jackets' goal. Greenlief finished with a career-high 17 saves.
The Jackets earn the No. 6 seed in the PAC Tournament and will take on third-seeded Allegheny on Saturday.
