Women’s Soccer downs W&J for first PAC win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (October 5) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team picked up its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win of the season as the Jackets dispatched W&J 2-0 at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg rises to 5-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in PAC play. W&J drops to 4-6-1, 1-2 PAC.

The Jackets established control of the game early with several scoring opportunities in the game's opening 15 minutes as a pair of shots on frame were saved, with two more missing wide.

Waynesburg broke through in the 29th minute with Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) scoring to cap an extended string of Jacket possession up the left side, into the middle and finally to Lorne up the right side. Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) fed Lorne with a diagonal ball into the 18-yard box and she beat the keeper with a grounded shot into the lower left corner.

Five minutes later, Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) sent a grounded cross from the left sideline through traffic to the feet of Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology). Pepe aimed a shot into the lower right corner to give the Jackets a 2-0 lead.

Waynesburg had several goal-scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the half but went into the break up 2-0. The Jackets outshot W&J 7-3 while putting five shots on frame.

The Presidents had a prime opportunity to cut their deficit in half with clean look on goal from inside the 18-yard box but Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) charged off her line and made a sliding save. A minute later, Lorne set up a clean look for Mohrbacher in the penalty area but Mohrbacher's shot on goal was saved.

Greenlief snatched a well-struck shot in the 70th minute to preserve the shutout. Mittendorf had a pair of shots on goal saved in the 73rd minute, one on a free kick another from the right post. Pepe nearly had a second tally in the 74th after receiving a feed from Alex Delaney (Sturgeon, Pa. / South Fayette) at the top of the six-yard box, but mishit the attempt.

Pepe almost took the ball off the Presidents keeper in the 84th minute as the players simultaneously struck the ball, ultimately sending it away from net.

Waynesburg outshot W&J 17-7 (12-4 SOG) and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Mittendorf led the Jackets with five shots, four shots on goal and an assist.

Greenlief made four saves in the shutout win. Waynesburg has not allowed a run of play goal in six of 10 games this season.

The Jackets continue league play on Wednesday at Thiel.
