Volleyball closes home slate with five-set win against Grove City

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 6) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team pulled out a five-set victory over Grove City in the Yellow Jackets' home finale at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.

Waynesburg moves to 7-15 on the season, 3-6 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) and 5-3 at home this season. Grove City, who could have clinched a spot in the six-team PAC Tournament with a win, falls to 14-13, 5-5 PAC.

The Jackets took the first and fourth sets and overcome a three-point fifth-set deficit to score a 25-20, 17-25, 12-25, 25-20, 15-11 victory. It is Waynesburg's first win over Grove City since 2009, snapping a 29-game streak for the Wolverines.

Grove City led 7-4 in the early going of the fifth set. Waynesburg scored six-straight points, all by kill or ace. Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) had three-straight kills to start the run and Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) capped it with an ace to put the Jackets ahead 10-7. Waynesburg led 13-11 after back-to-back Grove City points and closed out the match with a Wolverine service error and a Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) ace.

Neither team led by more than three points throughout the first set. The score was tied (seven) times throughout the frame, the last time at 21-all. The Jackets took advantage of a pair of attack errors and an ace by Krista Wilson (Greensboro, Pa. / Mapletown) to force set point. Ruffley dug out a hard-hit attack and the ball landed in play on the opposite corner of the floor to clinch the set 25-20.

The Wolverines led from wire-to-wire in a 25-17 set two win to even the match at one set apiece. Grove City never trailed in the third set either, as the Wolverines moved ahead 2-1 with a 25-12 victory.

Waynesburg built a 12-6 lead in the fourth set, prompting both of Grove City's timeouts in the opening 20 points. The Wolverines narrowed the margin to two (21-19) late in the set. Kristina Zadrony (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) had two kills in the final four points as Waynesburg forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win.

The Jackets used a balanced attack for the five-set win. Mortimore led the way with eight kills. Madi Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian), Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area), Wilson and Zadrozny each had seven kills. Ruffley added 23 assists and 23 digs. Cousley recorded 16 digs and both setters had two aces apiece.

Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) notched 32 digs on the evening.

The Jackets conclude their season at Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
