PITTSBURGH (Feb. 10) -- The Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) clash with Chatham University 87-72 Saturday afternoon at the Athletic and Fitness Center in Pittsburgh.
The Yellow Jackets (4-19, 3-15) started the contest strong with a pair of 3-pointers from
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. Morgantown) and
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) to lead 6-0 at the 8:37 mark. The Cougars (21-3, 17-2) responded with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 6:05 left in the opening quarter. A Friday 3-ball on the next possession gave the Jackets an 11-7 lead, but the home side responded with a 7-0 spurt over the next 1:31 to hold a 14-11 advantage. The Cougars did not trail for the rest of the game.
The Jackets trailed 19-15 after the first quarter, 40-28 at the break and 72-49 after 30 minutes.
Henkins had a team-best 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. She pulled down three rebounds and had two assists in the loss.
Friday finished with 13 points on 5-of-11 from the field and led the team in rebounds (seven) and assists (four).
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) pitched in 11 points and went 5 for 5 at the free-throw line.
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting, five rebounds and tied for the team-lead in blocks (two) and assists (two) coming off the bench. Fellow big's
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) added six and five rebounds, respectively. Howard added two blocks as well.
As a team, the Orange and Black shot 40.9% (27-of-66) from the field and 37.5% (12-of-32) from deep.Â
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. PAC showdown at Franciscan.
