STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 14) -- The Waynesburg University women's basketball team, behind a scorching 3-point-shooting night, dominated Franciscan University 88-47 Wednesday night in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action at Finnegan Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (5-19, 4-15) started the 3-point barrage from the start as
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) gave the visitors a 3-0 lead. The Barons worked (4-20, 2-17) their way back into the game and held an 8-7 lead at the 4:10 mark of the opening quarter. Both sides went back and forth and the Jackets held a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes.
The Jackets closed the half with an 18-5 spurt over 6:38 to lead 38-21 at the break. All 18 of those points came from beyond the arc as
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) hit the first two 3-pointers and
Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) connected on the Jackets' final 12 points of the half with four 3-balls of her own. The Orange and Black scored the final 3 points of the third quarter and outscored the Barons 22-13 in the penultimate quarter to lead 60-34 after three.
Waynesburg scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, 6 of which came from Henkins 3-pointers, to cap a 15-0 run and grow the visitors lead to 72-34 at the 7:32 mark of the quarter. The Jackets' largest lead of the night was 46 on a
Kayden Buell (Loyalton, Calif. / Loyalton) 3-pointer with 1:33 left.
As a team, the Jackets went 18-of-27 (66.7%) from 3-point range, a season high. The Orange and Black shot a season-best 56.9% (33-of-58) in the win.
Henkins and McFadden tied for the game high with 15 points each. Henkins finished 5-of-7 from beyond the arc while McFadden was a perfect 5-of-5 from deep.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) pitched in 10 points on 5-of-7 from the field to go with a team-high-tying seven rebounds.
Kayla Howard (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) notched 7 points on 3-of-5 and had game high ties in blocks (two) and steals (four).
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) tied Howard's team-high five rebounds to go with 2 points.
Wolf added 7 points on 2-of-5 from 3-point range along with three steals.
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) had a team-leading five assists, 4 points, two steals and three rebounds.
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong),
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) and
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) contributed 6 points each, with Burns and Miller canning two 3-balls each. Buell and
Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. Mount Pleasant) each nailed a 3-pointer in the win.
The Yellow Jackets will finish the season Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Thiel in a PAC clash. Saturday's matchup is senior day as well as alumni day.
