PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 27) – Junior pitcher
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) became the Waynesburg University softball team's all-time wins leader as the Jackets swept Chatham 3-0 and 12-0 in Pittsburgh on Wednesday evening.
The Jackets rise to 10-5 on the year and 3-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Chatham falls to 3-15, 0-4 PAC.
Wilson shut out the Cougars in both games of the doubleheader to notch her 40th and 41st career wins, tying and passing Courtney Messenger ('19) as the Jackets' career wins leader. Senior first baseman
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) also set a program record with her 41st career double, surpassing Alex Lawrence ('19).
Game 1 – Waynesburg 3, Chatham 0
The Jackets scored a run in the first inning with
Trinity Edge (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin) doubling home Brookman. Waynesburg added two more runs in the sixth with
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) smacking an RBI single and another run coming home on a groundout.
Wilson carried a no-hitter into the six inning of game one. She finally surrendered a base hit with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Wilson struck out the next four batters she faced to secure the one-hit complete game shutout. She struck out 10 in the one-hit seven inning shutout.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 12, Chatham 0 (5 innings)
The Jackets tallied a run in the first and second innings with Edge and
Jasmine Demaske (Waynesburg, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) posting run-scoring singles. Gratton drove in a pair of runs in a three-run third inning that grew the Jackets' lead to 5-0.
Waynesburg broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning.
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had an RBI double, Edge brought home two runs with a base knock and Demaske cranked a two-run homer. When the dust settled, the Jackets led 12-0.
Chatham loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth but back-to-back strikeouts by Wilson ended the inning.
Wilson retired the Cougars in order in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory and set the program wins record with her second shutout of the day. She struck out six and allowed four hits in the win.
Edge went 3-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Brookman and Gratton scored three runs each. Demaske had two hits, a home run, three RBI and a run scored.
The Jackets travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday for a nonconference doubleheader.
