PITTSBURGH (March 7) -- The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team fell 18-7 in a non-conference tilt at LaRoche University Thursday evening.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board first as
Mya Riggle (Ford City, Pa. / Armstrong) tallied her first collegiate goal on a free-position attempt to make it 1-0. The Red Hawks notched the next five goals to lead 5-1 with 7:32 let in the first quarter.
Ella Sheedy (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) made it 5-2 20 seconds later and the home side responded just 12 seconds later to make it 6-2.
Both sides traded goals back and forth in an exciting opening 15 minutes as
Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) and
Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) notched goals. The Jackets trailed 9-4 after the first quarter and 11-4 at the half.
Hyatt added her second of the game at the 14:11 mark of period three to make it 11-5. La Roche scored the next three goals before Lorne tallied her second. Hyatt and Lorne scored scored in the fourth quarter.
Lorne had three goals as well as game bests in ground balls (nine) and caused turnovers (five). She had a team-leading six draw controls.
Ziomara Reyes (Kearneysville, W.Va. / Martinsburg) finished with two ground balls and two draw controls.
The Jackets return to action Saturday for a home non-conference matchup with Sweet Briar at 11 a.m.
