WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 9) --
Ella Sheedy (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) tallied six goals, including the game winner, to lead the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team past Sweet Briar 8-6 Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium in a non-conference tilt.
Sheedy got the Yellow Jackets (1-4, 0-0 PAC) started on the right foot with an early goal to make it 1-0. The Vixen (2-4, 0-0 ODAC) responded by scoring the next four goals to lead 4-1 in the second period.
Sheedy netted the next three Orange-and-Black goals to tie things at 4. Sweet Briar added a goal late in the first half to lead 5-4 at the break.
Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) and
Mya Riggle (Ford City, Pa. / Armstrong) put the Jackets up 6-5 in the third with goals but the Vixens tied it at 6. Sheedy tallied the ultimate game winner in the third, making it 7-6. She added her sixth goal of the game in the fourth period to spell the 8-6 final.
Lorne tallied a game-best and single-game Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC)-high 19 caused turnovers. She added game-bests in ground balls (10) and draw controls (six).
Sheedy's marks in goals (six), points (7), shots (14) and shots on goal (13) were all career- and game-bests.
Anna Bradley (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) got the win in goal and made four saves.
The Jackets return to action next Saturday when they travel to Muskingum for an 11 a.m. non-conference matchup.Â
