AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 8) -- The Waynesburg University baseball team split a doubleheader with Trine University Friday morning and afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Jackets dropped game one 4-0 and won game two 8-3.
Game One
The Thunder (6-2, 0-0 MIAA) got on the board in the first with a RBI single to make it 1-0. Josh Hoogewe limited the Yellow Jackets' (4-3, 0-0 PAC) offense to just one baserunner in the first three innings. Trine added a run in the second to make it 2-0.
The Jackets got singles from
Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster), his second of the game, and
Seth Burgdolt (Taylorstown, Pa. / McGuffey) in the fourth to put runners at first and second with one out but were unable to capitalize.Â
Trine added a run in the fourth and fifth inning to lead 4-0 after five. Waynesburg's offense was unable to get anything going in the final three innings as the Jackets fell 4-0.
Gavin Pratt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels Area) got the start for the Orange and Black and went four innings.
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) pitched the final two innings.
Game Two
The Yellow Jackets (5-3, 0-0 PAC) got the bats rolling early in the bottom of the first as Mount knocked a lead-off single to left and stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs.
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) brought in Mount with a single to make it 1-0.
Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) drove home Burgdolt on a ground out, making it 2-0 in the first.
Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) followed with an RBI single to right to grow the lead to 3. A
Todd Burner (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) run-scoring single capped off the Jackets' 4-run first inning.
Dalton Lucey (Holmbrook, Pa. / West Greene) posted a scoreless second inning. The Jackets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the inning. Waynesburg added 2 on an error to lead 6-0 after two innings.
The Jackets capitalized on a pair of Thunder (6-3, 0-0 MIAA) errors in the third to score 2 more and make it 8-0. Trine added a trio of runs in the fourth, making it 8-3.
Lucey fired three scoreless innings the rest of the way to finish the complete game and lead the Jackets to the 8-3 win. He allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked three.
Burner finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Mount went 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
The Yellow Jackets return to action Wednesday when they take on Hilbert in a non-conference 1 p.m. doubleheader at home.
