Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Slow start sinks Women’s Lacrosse at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team fell 13-6 at Bethany in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Jackets fall to 1-11 on the season and 0-4 in PAC play. Bethany picks up its first league win of the year to move to 3-9, 1-4 PAC.

After falling behind 8-1 early in the second quarter, Waynesburg played the Bison even the rest of the game.

The Bison scored the game's first four goals before Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) put the Jackets on the scoreboard with 9:29 left in the first quarter. The score remained 4-1 for over eight minutes of game time before the Bison scored twice in the final minute of the period to carry a five-goal edge into the second quarter.

Bethany's lead grew to 8-1 after scoring twice in the first five minutes of the second. Angelina Darpino (Baltimore, Md. / Patapsco) cashed in on a man-up opportunity with under three minutes left in the half and Lorne scored with 13 seconds left in the quarter to send the teams to halftime with Bethany leading 8-3.

A Lorne tally with 6:32 left in the third quarter kept the Jackets within five at 9-4, however the Bison reeled off the next four goals to put the game out of reach and hold on for the seven-goal victory.

Lorne led the Jackets with four goals, two assists, 10 ground balls, seven draw controls and eight caused turnovers. Darpino and Ella Sheedy (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) had one goal apiece. Sheedy added four draw controls.

Megan Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) scooped five ground balls and caused four turnovers. Ziomara Reyes (Kearneysville, W.Va. / Martinsburg) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Diana Gurecka (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) made nine saves in the contest.

The Jackets held a 14-9 advantage in the draw control circle and caused 20 turnovers on the day.

The Jackets take on Chatham on Monday evening in Pittsburgh.
