Softball drops doubleheader at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio (April 14) – The Waynesburg University softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader at Hiram. The Terriers won 14-1 in five innings and took a 2-1 rain-shortened five inning victory in game two.

The Jackets fall to 15-10 on the year while Hiram rises to 12-10.

Game 1 – Hiram 14, Waynesburg 1 (5 innings)

The Terriers used a nine-run second inning to build a 14-1 lead over the first three innings. Seven of Hiram's nine runs in the second were unearned as the Terriers took advantage of three Jacket errors in the frame.

Waynesburg scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first with Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) scoring on a groundout off the bat of Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin). The Terriers responded with two RBI doubles and a run-scoring triple in the home half of the first and then pulled away with nine runs in the next inning.

Bryn Charnesky (Southmoreland) made her third appearance in the circle this season. She tossed 1.2 innings and allow five earned runs and seven unearned. Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) gave up two runs over the final 2.1 innings.

Game 2 – Hiram 2, Waynesburg 1 (5 innings – rain)

Hiram scored in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead right before the game was called due to rain.

Kaitlyn Jagielski (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) doubled in Trinity Edge (Franklin, Pa. / Franklin) in the fourth to tie the game at one. The Terriers used a double and two bunts to score the go-ahead run, which allowed the hosts to secure the rain-shortened win.

Edge got the start in the circle and held Hiram to two earned runs on five hits. She struck out five and walked none in 4.1 innings.

The Jackets host Bethany tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
