WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 21) – The Waynesburg University softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Saint Vincent College Sunday afternoon at the Baseball & Softball Complex.
The Bearcats (17-13, 9-7 PAC) took game one 2-0 while the Jackets (17-13, 9-7 PAC) posted a 9-1 run-rule win in game two.
In their final home collegiate game,
Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands) went 2-for-3 with a career-best five RBIs and 1 run,
Kayla Gratton (Monroeville, PA. / Gateway) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers Houston) was 1-for-1 with 3 runs and two walks.
Game 1 – Waynesburg 0, St. Vincent 2
The first two Bearcats batters reached on bunt attempts to start the game. With runners on the corners, the visitors executed a double steal to take a 1-0 lead. They added their second run in the first on a wild pitch to lead 2-0.
The Jackets looked poised to strike back in the bottom half of the frame as
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersville, Ind. / Henryville) and
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) reached base with a walk and a hit, respectively, to open the inning, but the Bearcats escaped the inning unscathed.
Waynesburg loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Higgins' hard-hit grounder to the left side resulted in a game-ending fielders choice.
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) settled into a groove after the first inning and held St. Vincent off the board for the final six innings. She allowed seven hits across seven innings and struck out five while allowing 2 unearned runs to move to 9-3 on the year.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 9, St. Vincent 1, 5 Innings
The Bearcats again got on the board first with a run-scoring double in the second to take a 1-0 lead.
The Jackets responded in the bottom half as Higgins ripped a triple to right center, scoring Brookman. As Higgins slid into third, the relay throw went past the third baseman into the dugout, allowing her to score and giving the Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Leading 3-1 in the third with the bases loaded, Bliss smoked a line-drive base-clearing double to left center, growing the lead to 6-1. Gratton added an RBI single later in the frame to make it 7-1.
Bliss continued her solid performance with a 2-run double in the fourth to grow Waynesburg's lead to 9-1.
After allowing a run in the second,
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) retired 9 of the next 10 batters, in route to a five-inning complete game win. She moves to 7-4 on the year after allowing just three hits and striking out 2.
Waynesburg's returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to Allegheny for a 3:30 p.m. PAC doubleheader.
