Women’s Lax sets season-highs in goals, draw controls and ground balls at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team set season-highs in goals, draw controls and ground balls in a 20-11 defeat at Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. 

The Jackets move to 1-9 on the season and 0-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) league play. The Bearcats rise to 2-6, 1-2 PAC.

Waynesburg scored three of the game's first four goals with Ella Sheedy (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley), Anna Bradley (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) and Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) scoring in the first six minutes of the contest. The Bearcats responded with four-consecutive tallies to take a 5-3 lead. Sheedy added her second goal to bring the margin to 5-4 before Saint Vincent scored the final goal of the period with 39 seconds left in the quarter. 

The Bearcats outscored the Jackets 11-3 over the second and third quarters to lead 17-7 heading into the fourth. Waynesburg scored three times in the first three minutes of the fourth to cut the margin to 17-10 before Saint Vincent scored three of the final four goals to close out the 20-11 victory.

The Jackets finished with 11 goals, 17 draw controls and 27 ground balls in the contest.

Sheedy matched a season high with five goals and tracked down four draw controls. Lorne scored two free-position goals, had one assist and totaled 11 ground balls, nine caused turnovers and five draw controls. She set Waynesburg's single-season record for draw controls (49) on the day.

Asia Revak (Masontown, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) recorded six draw controls on the day. Rylie Alexander (Mount Clemens, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse High School North) scooped four ground balls and had three caused turnovers. Ziomara Reyes (Kearneysville, W.Va. / Martinsburg) notched three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Diana Gurecka (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) made a dozen saves in net for the Jackets.

Waynesburg continues conference play at Grove City on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
