WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 10) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team played Pitt-Greensburg in a competitive scoreless draw in the Jackets' home opener at John F. Wiley Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Jackets remain unbeaten at 2-0-1 on the season while UPG moves to 2-1-2. Waynesburg has yet to allow a run-of-play goal this season. The draw was the first result that have secured against the Bobcats since 2018.
The Jackets had a pair of shots in the penalty area of UPG blocked in the opening 10 minutes. The Bobcats got a quality look with a header on off a corner kick in the 12th minute but
Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) snatched the shot out of the air.
Waverly Lorne (New Providence, N.J. / Governor Livingston) blocked a pair of UPG shots inside the 18-yard box in the 27th minute to thwart
The Jackets had two close calls at the game's opening goal in in the 30th minute. Following a Waynesburg corner kick,
Reagan Mittendorf's (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) long-range attempt hit the crossbar and
Julz Mohrbacher's (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) follow-up header from close range was stopped the Bobcat keeper.
Waynesburg withstood a late flurry of UPG shots in the final minutes of the half.
Abby Ngugi (Jefferson Hills, Pa. / Thomas Jefferson) swept away a tricking ball towards an open net in the 44th minute before Greenlief made a pair of saves in the final 90 seconds to preserve a scoreless score at the half.
Waynesburg had possession for 53 percent of the first half but UPG held a 12-6 edge in shots (6-1 SOG).
Mohrbacher had a grounded shot slip by the Bobcat goalkeeper in the 54th minute but a UPG defender held off a charging
Demaree Livingston (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Dublin) at the left post to prevent a tap-in goal.
Linzey Miller (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski) halted a potential Bobcat breakaway with a strong tackle outside of the 18-yard box with 13 minutes left to play. A minute later, UPG nearly tallied the game's opening goal but Greenlief tipped the well-struck ball over the crossbar.
Greenlief made a clutch one-on-one save off her line in the 81st minute with the ball rolling just wide of the right post. The ensuing corner kick for the Bobcats resulted in a header that sailed clear of the crossbar.
UPG owned an 18-11 edge in shots (11-4 SOG) and both teams recorded six corner kicks. Mittendorf had four shots and Mohrbacher aimed two attempts on frame.
Greenlief finished with 10 saves, her third career game with double-digit stops.
The Jackets host Baldwin Wallace on Saturday at 4 p.m.
