WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 14) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the 2024 season as the Jackets were edged 2-1 by Baldwin Wallace in a battle of the Yellow Jackets at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. 

Waynesburg moves to 2-1-1 on the season while BW rises to 5-2. The Jackets scored the game's first goal but Baldwin Wallace scored on a pair of set pieces in the second half to steal a road victory.

Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) sent a free kick from 30 yards out off the crossbar and freshman Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) headed in the rebound for her first goal as a Yellow Jacket as Waynesburg took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

Waynesburg carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break as the Jackets held a slight 9-8 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Baldwin Wallace broke through with a pair of set piece goals, the first two run of play goals surrendered by the Jackets this season. BW tied the game in the 61st minute on a corner kick as the ball was placed in the center of the six-yard box where Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) got a hand on the ball, but it was still headed in for the game-tying goal.

In the 74th minute, Baldwin Wallace lined up for a free kick 22 yards from yet. The rolling shot deflected off Waynesburg's wall of players and was redirected into the lower-left corner for a go-ahead goal.

Waynesburg managed several potential scoring opportunities over the final 15 minutes. Demaree Livingston (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Dublin) had an attempt sail high and Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, Va. / Hanover) had an attempt saved less than a minute later. The Jackets had a late opportunity in the penalty area thwarted by an offside flag and a pair of corners that came up empty in the final 15 minutes.

The Jackets had a last gasp corner kick with 18 seconds left but the BW goalkeeper snatched it at the near post to seal the game.

Waynesburg outshot Baldwin Wallace 19-17 (11-9 SOG) while Baldwin Wallace had a 6-4 edge in penalty kicks.

Mittendorf and Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) each had five shots and combined for five attempts on target. Gilchrest had four shots, three on goal. Greenlief finished with seven saves as the Jackets' streak of not allowing a run of play goal to start the season ended at 330:15.

The Jackets travel to Carlow on Tuesday evening.
