WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 22) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2024 season with a 6-1 victory over La Roche at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Waynesburg rises to 1-4 on the year while La Roche falls to 0-6.
The Jackets took the doubles point as
Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) and
Claire Lace (Orange, Va. / Orange County) combined for a 6-3 win at second doubles and Waynesburg collected a forfeit at third doubles.
Corey added a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles as Waynesburg won four singles flights and picked up another win via forfeit.
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and
Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) won in straight sets at second and fifth singles respectively.
Karly Starcher (Williamston, W. Va. / St. Mary's) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 4 singles and
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) took a forfeit at No. 6 singles.
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) went to a super tiebreaker at first singles, ultimately falling 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 to La Roche's Teresa Munoz Torrado in a back-and-forth match.
Lace was honored as the Jackets held their senior recognition prior to the match.
Waynesburg travels to Carlow on Tuesday.
