PK goal sinks Women’s Soccer in PAC opener against Westminster

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (September 25) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer was edged 1-0 by Westminster via a penalty kick goal late in the first half in the Jackets' Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener at John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Jackets fall to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. Westminster rises to 2-5, 1-0 PAC. Waynesburg notched its fifth game of the season without allowing a run-of-play goal.

The Titans notched the game's lone goal in the 43rd minute as a collision on the outer edge of 18-yard box resulted in an attempt from the penalty shot. A high, well-placed shot gave the Titans the game winning goal.

Waynesburg had a pair of scoring opportunities late in the first half with Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) freeing herself up for a shot at the lower left corner that was turned away by a diving save in the 34th minute. Following a corner kick, Natasha Ward (New Cumberland, W.Va. / Oak Glen) fired a left-angled shot on frame that was tipped away in play, but no Yellow Jacket was able to pounce on the loose ball in the six-yard box.

Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) made a key one-on-one save in the 38th minute to keep the game scoreless ahead of Westminster's PK goal.

In the second half, Waynesburg's top scoring opportunity came in the 78th minute with Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) approaching the left post and firing a shot on frame from less than 10 yards out. Her attempt was tipped over the frame by Titan goalkeeper Morgan Murphy.

The Jackets had along-range attempt saved and another off target in the final 10 minutes. The Jackets had a corner kick in the 84th but were unable to find an equalizer.

Westminster finished the game with a 24-12 edge in shots and a 14-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Titans took six of the nine corner kicks in the game.

Greenlief matched a career high with 13 saves on the night. Mittendorf led the Jackets with four attempts on goal.

The Jackets head to Bethany for their PAC road opener on Saturday.
